Former Hawk goes to NAIA National Womens Soccer Championship in Alabama
Lily Rainey's (#11) soccer team won a “wild card” berth
to the NAIA National College Soccer tournament and played
their first game against #9th ranked Simon Frazier of
British Columbia – They flew up north and competed in the
cold Northwest where they won 1 – 0. That win meant that the
girls got to compete in Alabama along with the top 16 teams
at the national championship tournament.
Their first game was against #7 ranked Vanguard
University – Vanguard competes in the same conference and
had beaten the team twice in the season – The girls were
determined to win and win they did – a big 6-1!
When
they were up against their biggest challenge yet – the #1
nationally ranked Lindsey Wilson of Kentucky– the conditions
were wet, cold and muddy and once again the girls came out
on top with a 2-0 win! That was the biggest surprise of all
as they all had return travel arrangements for the next day!
Never thinking they would get that far, even the college
booked the girls home after that game - so what an exciting
turn of events!
They were off to the semi finals and
their next game was against #4 ranked Cougars of Azusa
Pacific University. The game was very close with a 0-0 tie
after two 10 minute overtimes in freezing temperatures. They
advanced to penalty kicks and the goalie (who is the #1
goalie in the nation and an all American) saved two shots
and advanced them to the National Championship finals!
The local paper headlines read “Cinderella Team Point
Loma heads to the National Championship finals”! What an
amazing experience for the girls. Lots of locals came out to
cheer on the underdogs – but this Cinderella team needed to
dump the glass slippers for some rocket shoes to keep up
with the defending champions #2 ranked Lee of Tennessee!
They were absolutely amazing and the fairytale ended in the
championship game with a 2-0 loss… there were almost no
tears shed because the girls got so much further than anyone
ever imagined, had experienced the best times and would
never forget their Alabama experience!

Former Hawks Star Shines for UCLA
 11/9/09: Former TVSA Hawks standout
Dakota Collins has built up
an impressive resume of accomplishments in his relatively short career -- Great
Oak High School Athlete of the Year; National Cup champion; First Team
All-American, to name a few. As a freshman forward on UCLA's men's soccer team,
Collins can now add something new to his list -- Pac-10 champion. With a 2-1 win
on Sunday over Washington, the 10-3 Bruins won their second straight Pac-10
men's soccer title and sixth in the school's history.
Collins discusses with XK San Diego the difficulties he’s faced
adjusting to the bigger and stronger college players and what it was like to
play the 2008 national champions, Maryland, on their home turf.
XKSD:
What's the transition to playing at the collegiate
level been like?
DC: The transition at first was tough playing
with bigger and better players but it gets easier
with everyone on the team working for the same
thing, helping each other out you get used to the
level.
XKSD: How is your season going at
UCLA?
DC: The season has been going great. We
are looking to clinch a good seed in the tournament.
XKSD: What position(s) have you played?
DC: So far, only forward.
XKSD: What kinds
of things have you been learning?
DC: I've
been learning all kinds of things both academically
in the classroom and on the soccer field, but time
management is the biggest thing I've learned.XKSD: What's been your biggest challenge?
DC: My biggest challenge has been adjusting to
the physical aspect of the game. The players are
much bigger and stronger. I have to bring the best I
have to every training session and always try to
prove myself to the coaches.
|
XKSD: What's
been your most memorable moment?
DC: My most
memorable moment is the Maryland game. The
atmosphere there was just amazing with a couple
thousand fans all just screaming how they hate your
guts. It was great and we came away with the win
against the No. 1 team. It was a real confidence
booster.
XKSD: Has it been tough juggling
academics with soccer?
DC: That is another
thing that gets easier with time. At first it seems
overwhelming, but you get used to it once you get in
the swing of things.
XKSD: Do you have a
favorite class that you enjoy?
DC: The
classes are more challenging then enjoyable, but in
English I get enjoyment out of doing well on a paper
because it's difficult to do.
XKSD: What
advice do you have for young players who aspire to
play at the collegiate level?
DC: To the
kids, keep working hard in school and on the field.
You never know when it will pay off big.

Coach-Mentoring Program a Huge Hit
By Kathy Snyder
|
The TVSA Hawks’
coach-mentoring program provides ex-players or current college players a way to
learn the profession of coaching soccer by giving them the opportunity to work
with a Hawks team and an experienced coach. “Most of the players who have
gone through the program are former Hawks players and players we feel have a
good understanding of the game and the ability to teach young players,” Hawks
President Kelley Collins said. “We hope that after completing the program they
will join the Hawks coaching staff full-time.” Hawks directors David
Halliday and Nik Laytart hand-pick each player who participates in the program.
Many times participants begin working a summer or winter camp while they're
still players in the club or for community service while they're in high school.
After they graduate from high school and are in college, they come back to the
camps and earn a paycheck for their work. The program’s participants are
encouraged to obtain their coaching licenses, which are paid for by the Hawks,
and receive the benefit of working with the entire Hawks' coaching staff,
including its directors. They are also paid during the program as most are
trying to complete an education or working multiple jobs to supplement their
income. In the summer, the program usually has additional players who are home
on summer break. Ryan Halliday, 23, played for the Hawks in the Presidio
Premier League until he was 18. Once he finished high school, he began coaching
with the Hawks through the coach mentoring program. “I have
always been interested in coaching and helping kids
learn about the game the right way,” Ryan Halliday
said. |
“I think it is important to share all of the things that
people have taught me over the years and pass on the knowledge of the game.” Ryan played four years on San Francisco State University’s soccer team as a
midfielder. He worked with teams and camps over the summer and during breaks at
college. Ryan has been working with his father, David Halliday, who is the
Hawks’ director of coaching for the boys. “I really enjoy working with
kids,” Ryan said. “It is very rewarding and it is important that young kids who
are serious about soccer are shown the right skills and technique so that they
can progress to be able to play at the highest level possible.” Ryan has
both his E license and national D license and encourages aspiring coaches to get
their licenses as early as they can and get as much experience in coaching as
possible. Dwight Brandon Owens is also a part of the Hawks’ coaching
program. Owens always planned to coach soccer and give back in some capacity and
is grateful to the Hawks' program for allowing him to be able to coach a lot
quicker and easier than most programs. Owens’ journey through the program
began earlier this year when he returned home upon graduating from UCLA. He
expressed his desire to coach to David Halliday and was paired with BU9 Black
coach Pat Borin. “Once I expressed my interest in coaching to
David, he then allowed me to come out on certain
days and have an opportunity to run some practices
with his U11 team. I started gaining valuable
experience and David expressed his desire for me to
work with the younger boys. |
I
happily accepted and have been working with Pat ever
since August.” Owens’ greatest
influences in the program have been Borin and Halliday. “They have both
taken me under their wings,” Owens said. “They have allowed me to learn both
through example and first-hand experience.” Owens played for the Hawks
and the Nomads when he was younger and appreciates the chance to give back to
the Presidio League. He plans to obtain his coaching license and continue
coaching. I love teaching the kids something new and challenging. I feel
that I am able to teach them skills and techniques that I wish I could have
learned at a younger age. I feel like I am able to help them become better
players,” he said. Owens advises young aspiring coaches to pay attention
to detail. “Always look to learn and remember what you loved doing as a
player to incorporate into your lessons for the children. Just like with
playing, it’s good to study coaches to see what approaches work best for them.”

Women's Soccer
Warriors’ Strong Defensive
Effort Not Quite Enough
Submitted by: Ron Smith - October 17th, 2009
Playing
at Lovik Field for the last time in the regular season, Westmont
Women’s Soccer suffered a 2-1 loss in double overtime to the Sea
Lions of Point Loma Nazarene. As a result of the loss, the
Warriors fall to 2-4 in Golden State Athletic Conference play
and 4-6-1 overall. Point Loma Nazarene improved to 9-3-1 overall
and 4-3 in the GSAC.
“I thought we defended great,” said Westmont Head Coach Dave
Wolf despite the loss. “I was really proud of the team. I
thought they did a wonderful job of closing up space. I thought
they were tough. While we were overmatched physically, I thought
the defending by our team was fantastic.
“We were playing a 4-5-1 formation which is a
more defensive formation,” continued Wolf. “We
knew the chances were going to be hard to come
by. We generated a few, not a lot. We were
hoping to be real good defensively and win a 1-0
game.”
Senior midfielder Amanda Barret gave the
Warriors the 1-0 lead that Wolf had anticipated.
In the fifty-third minute, Barret put away a
cross from junior midfielder Jenna Nelson.
“Amanda had a really good performance – her
best of the regular season,” assessed Wolf. “She
has had a very tough year physically. Her legs
have started to come back a little bit which not
only helps you get places, but also helps you to
take a chance when you get it.”

Blumenshine's
Hat Trick Leads to Victory
September 8, 2009
Freshman Max Blumenshine's first three goals as a Cougar helped men's soccer to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Claremont Mudd-Scripps on Tuesday.
The Cougar men are now 2-3 on the season. Claremont drops to 0-1.
CSUSM looked focused and motivated en route to picking up the road win, taking control of the game early and never letting go. Blumenshine struck first in the 15th minute off a throw-in from Troy Skomra. About 10 minutes later, Blumenshine would capitalize on a pass from Curtis Marcikic. And finally just out of halftime in the 46th minute, he was played through by Brandon Zuniga to complete the hat trick.
"We met our goal today in terms of work ethic," said Head Coach Ron Pulvers. "We have the quality in our players, we just need the consistency."
CSUSM will play its home opener this Saturday against Westmont College at 3:00 PM.

The following interview is with Michele Enyeart who is a
Hawks Alumni (played with us from U13-U17), is a star college forward at
Portland and is on the women's U20 National team.
Michelle was coached by the TVSA Hawks Girls Director of
Coaching, Nik Laytart, from U13-U16. Mike Nicholson coached her Hawks
team when they were U17. Several of the questions Michelle is asked she
relates back to her experiences as a Hawk. One of her early memories as
a player is when she won State Cup (Hawks GU14 2000-2001 season). She
was asked her most influential coach and she replied she had two, Nik
Laytart and Mike Nicholson. Now remember this young woman has had MANY
great coaches, National team, ODP, college, etc. and she picked the
coaches who guided and coached her while she was a Hawk.
Two-time US Youth Soccer adidas® Golden Boot award winner

In 2005, the Under-18 Girls Laguna Hills Eclipse
(Cal-South) made a run for the title of US Youth Soccer National
Champions, and although the team didn't capture the title, one standout
player, Michelle Enyeart, made herself known. Enyeart's outstanding

regional tournament to earn one of four slots at the US Youth Soccer ODP
Championships where she was again awarded the adidas Golden Boot award
for her outstanding play.
Competing in the two most elite programs in youth
soccer, hard work, determination and gifted coaches put Enyeart at the
top of college recruit lists, which eventually landed her in the
position as the lead forward for the fourth-ranked Portland Pilots and a

Loudonville, NY- The Wagner College
women’s soccer team played the undefeated Saints of
Siena College to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon at a cool
and breezy Siena Field.
Freshman
Alexis Makwinski (Temecula, CA/ Great Oak)
notched her first collegiate goal as the Seahawks move
their record to 2-4-3 on the season.
Siena (7-0-2) took an early lead in the fourth minute of
the game when Maria DeMatteo scored a goal off an assist
from Cara Riley, giving Siena a 1-0 advantage.
With only seconds to go until the end of the first half, Makwinski’s header off
Whitney Prindible’s (Hockessin, DE/ St. Marks)
free kick put the Seahawks on the board, bringing the
game to a 1-1 tie.
Through another 45-minute half and two overtimes,
neither sidewas able to tally another goal as the game
ended in a 1-1 draw.
Between the pipes, sophomore goalkeeper
Sam Schueschner (Brookfield CT/ Brookfield)
went the entire 110 minutes while recording two saves.
Statistically, Siena out-shot Wagner, 16-9. As for
corner kicks, the Saints bested the Seahawks 4-3.
The Seahawks travel to Brooklyn, NY Friday October, 3
for their conference opener against the Blackbirds of
Long Island University. Start time is set for 6 pm.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- For the third straight game,
California Baptist University ripped off at least 20 shots, and Saturday the
Lancers parlayed 28 shots into three goals in a 3-0 win over visiting Ohio
Dominican. It is the Lancers’ third straight win and second straight shutout.
CBU, ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, improves to 4-1 on the season.
The Panthers fall to 1-3.
The Lancers out-shot the Panthers, 28-5, including a 15-3 total
on goal, constantly putting pressure on the Panther keepers. If not for a few
posts, crossbars and nice saves, the end result could have been much worse.
“Not converting your chances is a better problem to have than
not creating enough chances,” said CBU head coach
Kristen St. Clair. “The girls are working hard to get in position to get off
good shots. It’s a fixable problem, and I’m not worried about it because they
will come. I’m pleased with this result. It is good to get two resounding wins
against quality out-of-are teams, and it is good momentum for us heading to
Tennessee.”
Yesterday, the Lancers blanked No. 18 Bethel (Tenn.), 4-0, and
they next head to Cleveland, Tenn., Sept. 19-20 for a pair of games against No.
3 Lee (Tenn.) and No. 11 Savannah Art & Design (Ga.).
However, today was all about the Lancers’ ability to get
forward, creating dangerous chance after dangerous chance.
It was the usual suspect that got things started as All-American
Jacquelyn Witz scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the ninth
minute. Witz, who has scored in every game this year, came through the back door
to clean up a cross from
Kylee Nicassio to give the Lancers an early lead.
Despite getting 16 shots in the first 45 minutes, the Lancers
only carried a 1-0 advantage into the locker room. The good news, though, was
that the Lancer defense was up to the task again, limiting the Panthers to a few
non-threatening chances.
Emily Evanson and
Brittany Buchanan combined to make three saves in the second straight
combined shutout.
“We did a better job executing and played better today, which is
usually tough to do when playing back-to-back days this early in the season,”
said St. Clair.
Midway through the second half, All-GSAC
Lindsey Merrett gave the Lancers an insurance tally in the 65th minute. She
carried the ball just inside the box, took a touch to her right then rifled a
ball to the far post and past a diving Becky Williams. It was Merrett’s third
goal in two games.
Just 12 minutes later, freshman
Amanda Lammers literally slammed the door with a rocket from the right side
inside the far post for her first career goal.
ODU keepers Williams and Aimee Simonet combined to make 12
saves. The Lancers did not allow a corner kick, while taking five of their own.
Jackie ‘Rocky’ Garcia, who played for the Hawks for six years
and is currently in her Junior season playing with the University of San Diego,
was recently called upon by the Women’s National Team of Mexico to join their
roster.
Players on our older girls teams were very excited by the recent
news as Jackie has spent time during this last season training with the Hawks
players as she prepared to return to USD. Current accomplished players such as
Jackie ‘Rocky’ Garcia and Michelle Enyeart (US WNT try-outs) highlight the
success of many Hawks Alumni players who have pursued their goals over the years
after receiving quality local training from the Hawks organization.

POMONA – Freshman Luis Garcia (Escondido) fired a
shot from 30 yards out that bounced high above Grand Canyon goal keeper
Kyle Pearsall and that was enough for the Broncos, who defeated the
visiting 20th ranked Antelopes 1-0 in the season opener on a muggy,
windy day at Kellogg Field.
Garcia positioned himself on the left side at the 27
minutes, 45-second mark and got the ball from teammate Marc Glogowsky
(Oakland). “When the ball came to me, I thought for an instance that I
had an open look at the net,’’ he said. “All of a sudden, I heard
(teammate Nigel) Orozco say ‘Shoot it.’ I took a shot and it found the
back of the net.’’
The ball was a high shot that Pearsall misjudged and it
went in for the game winner. It marked the Broncos’ first season
opening win since the 2004 season when the Broncos defeated Bryant 4-2.
“Things went our way today and I’m proud of what we
accomplished,’’ Bronco coach Paul Caligiuri said. “We really played a
team game. We didn’t have everyone available, but I thought we
controlled the offensive end for most of the game. This was a
hard-fought game because that’s a pretty good team over there.
“This is a good win for us.’’ Junior Thomas Ryan (El
Cajon) earned the shutout with two saves – all in the second half.
The Broncos out-shot the Antelopes 12-4.
Luis Garcia who played many years for the Hawks
scored his first goal as a freshman at Cal Poly Pomona. Luis finished
his youth career playing on Coach Cliff McKinley's U18 team in Premier
Elite last season. Luis's older brother Jose is a former Hawks player
and current student. He also is currently coaching for the Hawks. GO
