Hello Hawks,

As teams are well into their seasons and winter is approaching we wanted to try and give information to all of our Hawk families. We will have Newsletters every couple of months, please email me at kcollins@tvsahawks.com to let me know what you think of them, what you want to see or any other ideas you might have. I want to hear from you!

Commitment

When we hear this word many thoughts come to mind. The word is often defined as a pledge or undertaking, dedication or application. When I think of commitment in relation to soccer I envision many different aspects of it. Commitment to club, to team, to coach, to the game and to yourself. After a player accepts a position on the team, that player has made a commitment that will last the entire season, through National or State Cup. The simple thing that this commitment means is attending practices and games. The commitment is really more than that though if you truly desire to be the best soccer player you can become. Following are commitments that you need to make to yourself:

  1. Playing with the ball as often as you can, juggling, dribbling, learning tricks, shooting on goal, playing as much as possible.

  2. Making sure you are prepared for every practice and game. Enough rest, eating properly, equipment, on time, etc.

  3. Working in a positive manner with your coach and teammates. Let them know they are important to your development.

  4. Sometimes things go as planned, others times not. Each situation needs to be looked at as a learning and growing experience. Don't give up on your team or yourself.

  5. Be willing to learn, be ready to learn and be open to learning. There is always something to learn no matter how good you are.

  6. Watch soccer whenever you can. Watch on TV, go to some of the older teams games, go to pro games, go to college games.

  7. Be coachable! You need to be able to communicate with your coach, listen and absorb everything they have to offer. Do what they ask you to do, there is usually a reason for it.

  8. Sometime your COMMITMENT to soccer means that you will miss something else (i.e. school dance, movie, party, etc). That is what a commitment is, being dedicated to something. The rewards you receive from your dedication should outweigh (in your mind, to you) what you are missing. YOU ARE A SOCCER PLAYER!! Commitment is not always easy, sometimes it means making the hard choice.

If you decide to continue playing in college and are being recruited or looking for a school to study and play soccer at one of the first things the college coach will ask your youth coach is about your commitment. He or she will want to know about all of the above. Your coaches MUST answer honestly because their reputation is on the line, they want to answer positively, BE COMMITTED and they will!

Hawks Alumni in the News!

Check our website periodically to read about former Hawks players making there marks at college and beyond. All the information is at the Hawks News www.tvsahawks.com/news.  One very special former Hawk, Michelle Enyeart was recently interviewed in Soccer America. Michelle is currently a 20 year old forward starring on her team at University of Portland. She is also a member of the US U20 National team. In her interview Michelle noted one of her earliest memories as a youth player was when her Hawks team won the 2000-2001 State Championships. Michelle has been coached by many great coaches throughout her career. The two coaches that she mentioned as being her most influential coaches is our Girls Director of Coaching Nik Laytart (coached her U13-U16) and former Hawks coach Mike "Nico" Nicholson (coached her at U17).
